2024 Honda CR-V | Powertrain
Key Powertrain Features
- Newly refined 1.5-liter turbo engine
- CVT updated for quicker response and more refined driving experience
- CR-V-first Hill Descent Control
Refined 1.5-Liter Turbo Powertrain
With an updated and refined direct-injection 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine under the hood the new 2024 CR-V demonstrates that even as Honda heads into the electrified era, the company continues to make important improvements in the efficiency and performance of its internal combustion engine technology.
Multiple enhancements to the 1.5-liter turbo provide a more refined driving experience and enhanced power delivery. Running on regular unleaded petrol, the engine produces 140 kW @ 6,000 rpm and maintains peak power over a broader range at high revs than before. Its 240 Nm peak torque spans 1,700-4,500 rpm.
VTEC variable valve timing is now used on the exhaust side of the twin-cam head. This helps improve exhaust efficiency and optimizing valve overlap, efforts that contribute to improved fuel efficiency. It also helps lower the engine speed for peak torque.
Improving acceleration response is a high-efficiency high-response turbocharger and low pressure-loss turbocharger piping. The turbocharger now routes exhaust gas diagonally to the turbine wheel, and the turbine blades also have been reshaped, helping the turbocharger generate pressure in a wider range of engine speeds and more efficiently.
The exhaust manifold is now a 4-into-2 design, which consolidates the exhaust from the number 1 and 4 cylinders into one port, and the number 2 and 3 cylinders in a separate port. This reduces exhaust pulse interference, improving intake and exhaust efficiency, especially at low engine speeds.
CVT: More Responsive and Quieter
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the 1.5-liter turbo features a quieter belt design and a thicker case that reduces vibrations. The CVT also provides significant drivability and performance improvements thanks to optimization of Torque On Demand control, early downshift during braking, and improved refinements to the Honda G Design shift. At full throttle, CR-V features Step Shift programming that simulates gear changes.

- 40mm longer wheelbase
- 10mm wider front and rear tracks
- 15 percent stiffer body construction for improved driving dynamics
- Front suspension mounted on new, lightweight rigid subframe
- Stiffer mount points for rear multilink suspension and subframe
- Improved steering feel and braking performance
New Enhanced Global Architecture
Honda architecture is a three-part modular system that takes advantage of component commonization to make the best product. This new approach to Honda architecture was used to create the 11th generation Civic and the new 6th generation CR-V.
Based on an enhanced version of Honda Architecture, the new CR-V features improvements in ride, handling and overall refinement. This chassis includes MacPherson struts in front and a multilink suspension in the rear.
For improved stability and a smoother ride, CR-V’s wheelbase has been extended to 2700mm (+40mm), and its front and rear tracks are significantly wider (10mm in the front and the rear), creating an athletic stance and enhancing stability.
More Rigid Body Structure
Significant improvements to CR-V’s structural stiffness, including a redesigned front subframe, benefit its ride quality, handling and collision safety protection. Stiffening members have been added to the rear door frame and B pillars, and more rigid mounting points are used for the rear springs and suspension arm mounting points. Overall, the new body is 15 percent stiffer.
For the first time, to achieve a radical reduction in cabin noise, vibration and harshness, and accurate steering response, CR-V also benefits from structural adhesive. Applied generously on the roof, A-pillars, B-pillars, floor pan, firewall, and rear structure, adhesives are applied where spot welds are performed, combining the strength of the weld and the broader surface area of the adhesive. This increases the stiffness of the joint, minimizing the need for increased sheet metal thickness or the addition of welded-on reinforcements.
Retuned Suspension
The front MacPherson strut suspension has been re-tuned for a more comfortable ride over rough surfaces, while heat treated lower ball joints reduce friction to create a more refined driving experience. A new lightweight, highly rigid cast aluminium subframe shaves 5 kilograms.
In the rear, the subframe for the multilink suspension has been stiffened with stronger mount points, and the rear spring rates of the mount support have been increased 15 percent for sportier handling and improved stability.
Responsive Steering
The CR-V uses a dual-pinion electronic power steering (EPS) system which features a honed steering column bearing to reduce steering friction and improve steering feel. In addition, the EPS has been tuned to provide excellent feedback and improved straight-line stability. A new electric motor control unit also enables more accurate and linear steering, while the variable gear ratio improves low speed turning and high-speed stability feel by changing gear ratios at low and high speeds.
The stiffer new aluminium subframe also positions the variable-ratio steering rack below the rear propeller shaft instead of above it as before. Moving the rack 32 mm lower, along with a low-friction column bearing and rack, significantly improves CR-V’s steering system rigidity and consequently, steering feel and accuracy.
Improved Brake System
CR-V’s brake controllability is improved by optimizing software for deceleration relative to tread force and pedal stroke.
All CR-Vs are equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The system provides a comfortable and refined feel at low speeds, predictable and easy operation on the highway, a sporty, fun-to-drive feel on winding roads, and reassuring high-performance stopping in emergency situations.
Large ventilated front brake rotors and rear solid rotors are standard. CR-V also uses a low-friction front caliper with a roll back spring to further reduce brake drag, contributing to fuel efficiency while still maintaining the excellent braking performance.
2024 Honda CR-V | Safety and Driver Assistive Technology
Key Safety and Driver Assistive Features
- Standard Honda Sensing™ system with new front sensor camera and radar
- Updated Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
- Next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure optimized for oblique collisions
- Next-gen driver and passenger airbags designed to cradle the head and help control rotation
- New standard front knee airbags
Improved Honda Sensing
A new Honda Sensing™suite of safety and driver assistive systems integrates a new front sensor camera and millimeter-wave radar. The new camera features a 90-degree field of view, up from 50 degrees on the previous generation. The radar is now mounted directly behind the Honda logo on the grille, which helps to increase its field of view to 120-degrees from the 50 degrees on the previous generation.
These wide angles improve collision prevention performance to recognize attributes of objects such as a vehicle or pedestrian, as well as white lines, road boundaries such as curbs, cyclists and motorcycles. The wide angle also enables expanded control range for CR-V at intersections.
The camera detects feature points of a target and also recognizes attributes of objects such as vehicles or pedestrians. With the use of an exceptionally fast processor, the system measures distance and the lateral position of objects based on the change in the size of the target object, how long it took for the change to occur and speed of the vehicle. This enables the camera to recognize the various objects described above.
Honda Sensing™ functions include:
- Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™): New camera system and more advanced software enables the use of CMBS™ in more situations, including the detection of pedestrians and cyclists. If no corrective action is taken when FCW signals an alert, CMBS™ can apply different levels of automatic emergency braking action to help reduce vehicle speed and eventual collision forces, and therefore to help reduce the severity of a collision.
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW, integrated with CMBS™): When the system determines a collision is possible with a detected vehicle, visual and audible alerts from the FCW system prompt the driver to take corrective actions.
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): New camera system improves Adaptive Cruise Control with more natural brake feel and quicker reactions to changes in traffic. It also responds more quickly when changing into an open lane from behind a slower car and better maintains a constant vehicle speed in downhill situations.
- Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS): LKAS reduces the need for steering correction movements and driving effort. For the 2024 CR-V, LKAS has been improved with more linear and natural feeling steering assist, better line tracing, and improved resistance to crosswinds.
- Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM): Can identify solid or dashed painted lane lines to find the edge of the road and uses steering force to keep the vehicle from departing the lane or roadway altogether. The detection range is expanded up to road shoulders and curbs because of the wide-angle detection sensor.
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW): Integrated with RDM, LDW operates at speeds from approximately 65 to 145 km/h and is designed to alert the driver if the vehicle is leaving a detected lane without the turn signal being activated.
Additional Safety and Driver Assistive Technologies
The 6th-generation CR-V also features additional safety and driver assistive technologies.
CR-V features a Driver Attention Monitor, which continually monitors and assesses driver behavior behind the wheel to help determine if the driver is becoming inattentive. If it detects fatigue, the driver is alerted by a coffee cup icon and a 4-level bar graph on the dash. As the driver’s attention drops, fewer and fewer bars are illuminated, and when it drops to two, the system displays a message inviting the driver to take a break. If the driver continues driving and the graph drops to the lowest level of one bar, a beeper sounds and the steering wheel vibrates, prompting the driver to pay closer attention or take a rest break.
A new Rear Seat Reminder is also standard for all three rows. A reminder appears on the driver information interface and an alert will sound when the car is turned off and notifies drivers to check the rear seating area for children, pets or other precious cargo when exiting the car.
ACE™ Body Structure and Collision Protection
Designed to meet present and anticipated future frontal collision standards while minimizing additional weight, CR-V features the newest version of Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. ACE was introduced nearly two decades ago and has been continuously advanced, designed to help protect vehicle occupants and improve frontal crash compatibility between vehicles of varying sizes, such as an SUV and a small car. For the sixth-generation CR-V, the ACE architecture is updated to target 5-star crash test ratings and exceed upcoming safety standards.
This latest version of the ACE structure in the new CR-V features a new structure that incorporates many of the new features introduced on the 11th-generation Civic. This includes a robust upper member constructed of high-strength steel, and an A-pillar structure, side frame and lower firewall structure all designed to route crash energy around the cabin, especially in oblique impacts.
Additionally, side impact protection has been enhanced to meet new, tougher side-impact standards. A new, stiffer B-pillar and side sills are used, along with stronger door stiffening beams and a stronger rear wheel arch. The body also is designed to route energy into the floor in the case of a rear collision.
Advanced Airbag and Seatbelt Technologies
CR-V uses the next-gen Honda front driver and passenger airbags first introduced in the
11th-generation Civic. These new airbags are specifically designed to reduce head rotation in a collision, especially an oblique collision. On the driver’s side, the airbag uses a tuck sewing shape for increased rigidity of both sides of the airbag to cradle and hold the head, mitigating rotation and reducing the likelihood of brain injury.
On the passenger side, a three-chamber airbag design achieves a similar result. The three chambers inflate separately, with the two outer chambers that extend above the main chamber designed to cradle the head and help control rotation.
CR-V further benefits from additional standard airbag technology, with a total of 8 airbags. Driver and front passenger knee airbags are used in CR-V for the first time, along with side curtain airbags and side impact airbags for both driver and front passenger.
Seatbelt technology has been updated as well, with an outer lap belt pretensioner used on front seatbelts, with a load limiter used on the driver’s side to help prevent chest injuries. In the rear, pretensioners are used in both outboard positions, along with load limiters, and CR-V now features a rear seatbelt reminder, which informs the driver if a rear seat occupant is detected as not properly buckled up.
