- Porsche remains in top positions in all standings
- Run of points across seasons extended further
- Victory and second place in Shanghai last year
The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team is in the top 3 of all world championship standings after the start of the second half of the season. The fact that World Champion Pascal Wehrlein and teammate António Félix da Costa are in second and third place respectively in the drivers’ standings is testament to a strong team performance. The Porsche factory team is the only team in the field to have picked up points at every race of the season so far. Their run of points even extends over the previous 19 races – a streak that puts them ahead of the next best team by 11 races. And Porsche is currently in second place in the manufacturers’ standings.
The good foundation for the remaining 7 races is down to further improved performance in qualifying compared with last season. The team from Weissach makes it into the duels more often than the other teams. Wehrlein even won a group phase for the 34th time in Tokyo – a Formula E record.
Porsche record in Shanghai
While the electric world championship is making only its second appearance in Shanghai, it is in the Chinese metropolis that Wehrlein will be passing his personal record of 90 E-Prix starts since his first race in 2019. Last year he finished in P2 in the Saturday race on the shortened Formula 1 track. On Sunday he crossed the finish line in 20th place after coming into contact with another car, while teammate da Costa won the race. Conversely, the man from Portugal finished in only eighteenth place the day before after a penalty. He had crossed the finish line in fifth place.
The 3.051-kilometre version of the Shanghai International Circuit is a permanent racetrack with numerous wide, fast sections. The high speeds mean that slipstream driving is a key factor.
Fourth time around for rapid charging during the race
On Saturday, the Pit Boost will make another return – for the fourth time. During the 34-second mandatory pit stop, 3.85 kWh of electricity will flow into the battery (10 %) – innovative rapid charging with 600 kW of power. By way of comparison: The Formula E safety car – the road-going Porsche Taycan Turbo GT – charges with up to 320 kW.

The CCS (Combined Charging System) symbolises a transfer of technology to series production: Socket and plug for the 99X racing car are the same as for the electric Porsche production sports cars. The CCS combines the benefits of alternating current charging with the benefits of direct current charging, meaning it enables more gentle charging at home and more powerful fast charging on the go.

Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E: “In China we will be back on a permanent racetrack, which means that we will see slightly different racing than last time around in Tokyo. The races will be very tactical and there will be lots of overtakes. Energy management will be key. We were very strong in Shanghai last season. We will be building on this and are looking forward to the two races.”
Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche factory driver: “In the weeks leading up to the races in Shanghai I will be doing a lot of driving. We’re doing some simulator work and I’m taking part in the endurance programme with Porsche Penske Motorsport. I’m looking forward to it. Last season I made it onto the podium with P2 in the first race in Shanghai. I think that we should be strong there again this time.”
António Félix da Costa, Porsche factory driver: “I have a lot of positive memories of Shanghai from last year. We won a race there and our overall package was much stronger than before. Which is why I’m looking forward to Shanghai – particularly after a result that wasn’t quite as good in Tokyo in terms of points haul. But we learned a lot which is why we are confident going into the race weekend in China.”
