Maserati has selected YCOM to bring the Trident back to GT competitions. The Modena manufacturer and the leading advanced technology company – a specialist in the development of motorsport projects and a world-renowned expert in lightweight composite structures design and manufacturing – have entered into a technical partnership agreement for the new Maserati GT2.
After its debut in Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, Maserati is about to come back to racing. The return of the glorious Trident to the GT Championship will provide a high-performance car to the teams willing to compete in the Fanatec GT2 European Series.
From the earliest stages of this project, YCOM proved to be the ideal teammate, as a unique partner to fast-track development; an example of Italian engineering excellence – active in Formula One, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, GT and Formula E – based in the Motor Valley area, which will make a significant contribution and leave an imprint in terms of product development and after-sales support to the teams.
Founded in 2008 to develop motorsport projects, YCOM now applies its motorsport approach to new frontiers, thus perfectly reflecting and understanding Maserati’s racing vision for the future.
Type-approved for the GT2 class, the Maserati GT2 is the natural evolution of the Maserati MC20 super sports car, designed and developed to consolidate and define the Trident’s racing future in the world of motorsport.
It embraced the important and glorious legacy of the Maserati MC12 in the GT championships between 2004 and 2010 and is dedicated to private teams: Maserati focused on developing a product that not only stands up to racing challenges but is also ideal for gentleman drivers when it comes to handling, driveability and performance.
The Maserati GT2 took part in the shakedown at the Autodromo Varano de’ Melegari in early March and is currently undergoing a series of tests ahead of the car’s official unveiling at the Spa 24 Hours, before making its debut in the Fanatec GT2 European Series later this year.
Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse: “Maserati has embarked on a new journey in motorsport: the GT2 Championship. We are committed to building a promising and strong future on our glorious roots. The decision to work with an example of excellence like YCOM came easy. We chose a partnership with people driven by our same passion, values, and ambition, focused on excellence and with the capability to develop a powerful car capable of competing at the highest level of motorsport and of making the difference for our customers. I am confident that the Maserati GT2 will reflect all of the hard effort put in by the exceptional women and men involved in this project”.
Nicola Scimeca, YCOM Managing Director: “YCOM is proudly working alongside Maserati on the GT2 programme by applying all the know-how acquired over the last 15 years behind the scenes in motorsport. YCOM shares with Maserati a strong passion for racing and a challenge-driven DNA. Our people are fully committed to delivering the best results in terms of performance, and we’re enjoying this unique combination of Italian-made craftsmanship. On top of that, having been personally involved in the MC12 project in the past, I’m excited to see Maserati in this new motorsport venture”.
