Automobili Lamborghini and the Italian “Polizia di Stato” are celebrating 20 years of a compelling and altruistic collaboration, which began in 2004 with the delivery of a Lamborghini Gallardo. Since then, this partnership has enabled the Italian State Police to benefit from a succession of high-performance vehicles, used as valuable tools in patrolling and emergency medical response services.

Notably, these vehicles have completed over 200 organ transport missions across Italy, contributing in many cases to saving lives. Additionally, they have featured in more than 1,500 road safety education events to promote a culture of safe driving.

“We are extremely proud to celebrate 20 years of collaboration with the Italian State Police, an institution we deeply respect for its daily work protecting the safety of Italian citizens,” stated Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “Knowing that our vehicles have supported the police in their road operations and have contributed to saving lives is greatly gratifying. This cooperation represents the strong bond between Automobili Lamborghini and Italy and its institutions, despite our international outlook.”

“The 20-year synergy with Automobili Lamborghini reinforces the Italian State Police’s commitment to fulfilling a delicate task such as urgent organ transport, an activity carried out in close collaboration with the National Transplant Centre. This helps to make one of the missions of the Polizia di Stato increasingly tangible, namely being of service to all citizens,” said the Chief of Police – Director General of Public Security, Prefect Vittorio Pisani. “The Lamborghinis in use, from the Gallardo to the most recent Urus, allow us to rely on cutting-edge equipment and technology, ensuring our specially trained drivers can carry out this vital service quickly and with maximum safety.”

In total, six vehicles have joined the Italian State Police fleet over 20 years, each with specific characteristics and advanced technologies designed to support security and emergency operations and creating a partnership rich in stories and significant events.

Gallardo (2004-2005)

The collaboration began in 2004 when Automobili Lamborghini delivered the first Gallardo 510-4 to the Italian State Police, delivering the first organ transport in September of that year. This car was the first production Lamborghini equipped with a V10 engine, featuring an advanced 5-litre dry-sump lubrication system, dual overhead camshafts for each cylinder bank, variable valve timing (4 per cylinder), and chain-driven timing.

The Gallardo was assigned to the Stradale unit in Rome and completed four years of service, covering approximately 140,000 kilometres in patrolling operations in central and southern regions and urgent medical interventions. Equipped with traffic monitoring devices, the Gallardo could detect dangerous driving behaviours, identify licence plates, and transmit real-time images to operational centres.

In 2005, a second Lamborghini, also a 510-4, was delivered for use in the Bologna area, featuring similar equipment for road safety monitoring and the important addition of a refrigerated compartment in the boot for urgent organ transport.

Gallardo LP 560-4 (2008)

In 2008, the first Gallardos were replaced by the Gallardo LP 560-4, an upgraded version with superior performance and advanced technology. Featuring a 5.2-litre V10 engine producing 560 CV, permanent all-wheel drive for maximum dynamic stability, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, and a top speed of 325 km/h, this successor to the Gallardo served the Italian State Police well. Assigned to central and southern regions, it operated primarily along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway. The front boot was also fitted with a refrigerated compartment for rapid organ transport, along with a defibrillator, supporting emergency medical operations and saving lives.

In addition to daily services, the Gallardo participated in numerous representational events, such as the traditional Police Day parade in Rome, and served as an escort vehicle in vintage car competitions like the Targa Florio and the Milano–San Remo rally. One of the earlier models even represented the Italian State Police’s colours in New York, parading during the Columbus Day celebrations in 2004 and 2005.

Huracán LP 610-4 (2014-2017)

In 2014, Automobili Lamborghini delivered a Huracán LP 610-4 to the Italian State Police, followed by a second model in 2017. The vehicle features a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine producing 449 kW / 610 CV, with direct and indirect injection, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 325 km/h. Designed specifically for this collaboration, the Huracán is equipped with all-wheel drive and a chassis made of aluminium and carbon fibre, ensuring stability even at high speeds. Every detail has been engineered for maximum performance, including an aerodynamically optimised roof-mounted beacon. The ultra-flat lights include blue LEDs at the base to enhance visibility, while the aluminium casing features white LEDs on the front, rear and sides.

In February 2023, as part of the national Cross-Over programme, the Lamborghini Huracán assigned to the Emilia-Romagna Traffic Police was used for a critical organ transport. A kidney was safely collected from San Salvatore Hospital in L’Aquila and transported to Le Molinette Hospital in Turin. The timely delivery of the vital organ saved the life of a 57-year-old woman.

Urus Performante (2023)

The latest vehicle to join the Italian State Police’s fleet is the Urus Performante, delivered in Rome’s Piazza del Viminale in December last year, in the presence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, and Chief of Police Vittorio Pisani, who received the keys directly from Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

The vehicle is equipped with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing a maximum output of 666 CV and 850 Nm of torque between 2,300 and 4,500 rpm, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 306 km/h. This model was customised in Sant’Agata Bolognese with a livery designed by Lamborghini’s Centro Stile, combining the classic “Polizia di Stato Blue” with white and tricolour stripes along the sills and beltline.

The Urus has been fitted with essential public safety equipment, including a secure weapon drawer, a collapsible message panel, a compartment in the boot for tools, and a defibrillator. As with all delivered vehicles, it features a refrigerated compartment for organ transport, with a display and data logger for constant temperature monitoring.

Automobili Lamborghini is honoured to continue this historic partnership, which highlights innovation and social commitment through vehicles that not only achieve exceptional performance but also support the Italian State Police in their most critical missions.
