  • Ranger Plug-In Hybrid combines full Ranger towing, payload and off-road prowess with zero-emission driving capability and Pro Power Onboard for off-grid work and play
  • Innovative powertrain delivers 697 Nm of torque – the most of any production Ranger model – as well as 281 PS, up to 43 km EV driving and reduced cost of ownership
  • Deliveries now underway for the Ranger PHEV that continues the global success story of the pickup sold in 180 markets worldwide – and Europe’s favourite for the past 10 years

The new Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) delivers all the no-job-too-big capability of Europe’s best-selling pickup – for the first time boosted by an advanced hybrid powertrain that can put electric power to use on the road or the worksite.

Ranger PHEV’s petrol-electric hybrid technology enables up to 43 km zero tailpipe emission driving 1 and reduced cost of ownership alongside the same towing, load-carrying and off-road capability Europe’s pickup customers expect from the versatile truck that has been helping them get the job done for more than a quarter-century.

Available as an exclusive Stormtrak launch edition as well as commanding Wildtrak and high-specification XLT variants, Ranger PHEV also introduces Pro Power Onboard  to the Ranger line-up for the first time – powering directly from the onboard battery up to 6.9 kW of tools and equipment for work and play.

“Ford knows pickups. Now we’ve combined decades of know-how, input from the customers that use Ranger for work and play every day, and innovative hybrid technology to create the Ranger PHEV,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe. “Ranger PHEV can do everything Ranger does, with the added benefit of versatile electric power for more torque than ever, driving with zero tailpipe emissions in the city or running a worksite in the wilderness.”

Ranger PHEV production for Europe is already underway at Ford’s facility in Silverton, South Africa, with first deliveries to European customers now also underway. Ranger recorded its tenth consecutive year of market leadership in Europe in 2024, with segment share growing to more than 43 per cent.

Ranger was also the best-selling pickup in 10 European markets last year and accounted for more than half of all pickup sales in four European markets – including Britain and Germany. More than half a million Rangers have been sold in Europe since the previous generation model was launched in 2012. The Ford Ranger is also a global success story – sold in 180 markets around the world.

Bringing plug-in power to pickups

Ranger PHEV’s all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain combines Ford’s 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine and 10‑speed automatic gearbox with a 75 kW electric motor (e-motor) and an 11.8 kWh (useable) lithium-ion traction battery. The battery can be charged by plugging into an external power source, as well as by the petrol engine or by capturing energy when coasting.

The battery takes less than four hours to charge using a single-phase 16 amp charger, and with a full charge, Ranger PHEV is capable of up to 43 km pure-electric driving – more than the daily driving distance of 52 per cent of Ranger customers according to Ford research.

Where available, Ford Pro Home Charging will enable owners to schedule charging during cheaper overnight tariffs for even further reduced cost of ownership. Ford projections suggest business customers can also benefit from significant cost-savings: A Ranger PHEV customer in Germany could save €850 annually compared with the Ranger 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, when charging daily using business electricity tariffs and driving 80 km per day.

On the move, drivers can choose when and how to use battery power with Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later or EV Charge modes.

The new Modular Hybrid Transmission neatly integrates the e-motor into the bellhousing of the 10-speed gearbox. An electronically-activated clutch mechanism engages and disengages the e-motor and petrol engine according to the drive mode selected – optimising efficiency as well as torque delivery for load-hauling and off-roading.

The new configuration also maximises refinement and comfort. In addition to seamlessly switching between petrol, hybrid and electric power, it also enables the standard dual-zone air-conditioning to continue running under electric power when auto-start-stop deactivates the petrol engine at traffic lights or in stop-start traffic. Active Noise Control technology – similar to that used in premium headphones – boosts refinement regardless of the power mode.

Up to 697 Nm of torque from the combined e-motor and EcoBoost petrol engine is the highest of any production Ranger ever – and peak power of 281 PS is more than a Ranger 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel.

High torque output at low speeds and additional motor-braking from the pickup’s regenerative charging system support effortless acceleration and improved descending control when carrying payloads up to one tonne and when towing up to 3,500 kg – a requirement for 55 per cent of Ranger customers according to Ford research. Near-instant electric torque and the enhanced motor-braking also help optimise off-road capability and make lighter work of demanding conditions like rock crawls and steep inclines.

Ranger PHEV’s e-4WD system can automatically send petrol, electric or hybrid torque to all four wheels to help tackle challenging terrain or suit specific driving scenarios – supported by a dual-range transfer box and rear differential lock. Drivers can choose between Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, Tow/Haul, Mud/Ruts and Sand modes, and Ranger PHEV will adjust the torque distribution to the wheels for the best performance.

The pickup’s rear frame rails have been re-engineered to house the traction battery while optimising load-bed functionality and driving performance. Ford engineers also revised the suspension tuning compared with diesel-powered Rangers for optimum comfort and assured on- and off-road performance, taking into account Ranger PHEV’s unique chassis and weight distribution.

No compromise at work or play

Ranger PHEV is the first Ranger to offer Ford’s Pro Power Onboard technology, meaning customers who work hard and play hard can leave their generators at home and power high-draw tools and equipment using the traction battery.

Customers can specify a 2.3 kW system that’s ideal for powering weekend trips to the trails with the capacity to comfortably charge multiple e-mountain bikes (650 W) and a portable fridge (65 W) to get the most out of the day.

A 6.9 kW system is designed to meet the demands of heavier-duty equipment. This higher power version features two 15 A outlets in the load box, with 3.45 kW available from each outlet – providing more than enough power to run a small worksite with compact cement mixer (1,500 W), angle grinder (3,000 W) and flood lights (800 W) running simultaneously.

The next-gen Ranger development process involved more than 5,000 interviews with customers to understand how they use their pickups for work, play and family. Many Ranger customers are dual-use small businesses who put their pickups to work during the week and use them for leisure at weekends. Three highly-specified Ranger PHEV variants are equipped to deliver with no compromise on capability or comfort whatever the assignment.

Every Ranger PHEV features a five-seat Double Cab and a versatile, durable load-bed designed to accept a Euro pallet between the wheelhouses. A standard Easy Lift tailgate and cargo light are designed to make accessing load-bed cargo easier.

In the cabin, Ford’s SYNC 4A connectivity system with connected navigation and a 12-inch vertical touchscreen is standard, as is an 8-inch digital instrument cluster and wireless phone charging. Standard driver assistance technologies include Pre-Collision Assist, Lane Keeping Aid and rear-view camera.

Ranger PHEV Wildtrak variants add unique interior and exterior details, heated front seats and steering wheel, and 360-degree Zone Lighting for better visibility around the pickup when working or setting up camp in low-light conditions.

The Ranger PHEV Stormtrak launch edition also features unique styling and materials alongside a 10-speaker B&O sound system, Matrix LED headlamps, 2.3 kW Pro Power Onboard and the innovative Flexible Rack System for the load-bed.

A wide range of optional features designed to help customers get the most out of their Ranger PHEV includes innovative towing technologies such as Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which enables drivers to manoeuvre trailers easily using a dedicated controller and monitor progress using the 12-inch touchscreen.

From – beekeeping to fire-fighting – Ranger customers use their pickups for a wide variety of specialised roles, and can tailor their Ranger PHEVs using a comprehensive range of dealer-fit accessories, from rear canopies and covers to bike racks and roof tents.

Like every vehicle from Ford Pro, Ranger PHEV is backed by a comprehensive supporting suite of servicing, charging, intuitive software and flexible financing to simplify ownership, improve productivity and reduce running costs.
